Last Saturday, I saw how how they strut, glide and sway their way through the spotlight in a pageant like no other (except maybe in Eng'g): Mutya ng Molave 2004!
In its 20th year, we decided to have a Hollywood theme, away from the usual Miss Universe-like theme. My friend, "Ms. Ylaya Recto a.k.a. Nicole Kidman" joined the pageant. He's a guy and yup yup, all the candidates were bonafide males and they dress in "drag" just for the joy, and tradition and/or empowerment purposes. He's really not that good in dressing up, so we came to the rescue. The candidates' troops of make-up artists and costume designers is called "mommies (sing. mommy)" and I'm one of them. I designed his Moulin Rouge outfit complete with the famous stockings and laces thing with the corset. It's really a scene stealer because the candidate before him was Whoopi dressed in her Sister Act thing. The funny scenario was there they was in the stage, the nun and the slut (sorry for the word) standing side by side. Other scene stealers were Natalie Portman and Drew Barrymore in their almost-exact copies of the very costumes that the artists wore in Star Wars and Ever After respetively. But the real star was Reese Witherspoon. PM (the contestant) wore a not-so-exact copy of Reese's Legally Blonde outfit but he wowed the crowd when in the middle of his strutting, he placed his pink bag on the floor (with a stuff toy Bruisser!) and performed the meanest "bend and snap" that I've ever seen in my life! For that, he bagged the Star of Hollywood Award.
The pageant was a to-die-for success. Production numbers, talent portion, swimsuit portion, long gown competition, question and answers, the works! Don a.k.a. Juicy Pussy Liu (a.k.a. Lucy Liu) claimed the title of Mutya ng Molave 2004, PM a.k.a. Elle Woods (a.k.a. Reese Witherspoon) came in as 1st runner-up and my friend Inad a.k.a Ylaya Recto (a.k.a. Nicole Kidman) got the 2nd runner-up.
As the fireworks blasted-off, our tired and weary bodies nearly gave in, not because of fatigue, but because of pure and solid joy. Infinite cheers for the people behind this momentous event. Cheers cheers cheers...
